If you have a congested sinus problem you will know how miserable it can make you feel. The headache, which gets worse if you bend your head down, the awful ‘can’t breath properly’ feeling and the continual feeling of tiredness even first thing in the morning are some of the effects of your sinuses being blocked. Chronic sinusitis can last for a long time and does not respond to antibiotics as it is not an infection but usually a reaction to allergens or irritants in the air. If you have acute sinusitis you will need to see your doctor however as this can be caused by an infection.
Over the counter remedies for congested sinuses
You can try anti-histamines if your sinus problems are caused by an allergy. Most of the newer ones don’t send you to sleep but you should be careful about driving or using machinery until you know how they are affecting you. Over the counter decongestants and nasal sprays can be useful but shouldn’t be used long term as they can have a rebound effect and make your congestion worse. Decongestants can also cause sleep problems or raise your blood pressure.
Home remedies for congested sinuses
One of the best things you can do to relieve the congestion it wash the sinuses out with a saline solution. The easiest way to do this is using a Neti pot. A warm salt water solution is place din the pot and used to irrigate the sinuses. It sounds much worse than it is! If you have the correct concentration of salt and make sure it is at body temperature you will hardly feel anything. Makes sure you dry out the sinuses correctly afterward to prevent infection. I have been using a neti pot for about a year and have found a big improvement in my congestion as well as a decrease in the amount of decongestants I use.
Another method you can try is a steam treatment. Eucalyptus oil can be added to almost boiling water and the steam inhaled for about fifteen minutes. Twice a day is recommended if your congestion is severe.
Congested sinuses are a problem for very many people and, rather than take medication which may have side effects, try a home remedy first. I can say from personal experience that using a neti pot to do a saline washout is very effective. So give it a try and you may see a real improvement in the amount of sinus congestion you experience.
